Core Web Vitals are Google's user experience metrics that measure real-world page performance. The three metrics are Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) measuring loading speed, Interaction to Next Paint (INP, replacing FID) measuring interactivity responsiveness, and Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) measuring visual stability. Google uses these as ranking signals, making performance optimization directly tied to search engine visibility and rankings.

Google defines 'good' thresholds as: LCP under 2.5 seconds (loading), INP under 200 milliseconds (interactivity), and CLS under 0.1 (visual stability). Scores above these thresholds are 'needs improvement', and significantly worse scores are rated 'poor'. Aim for the good range across all three metrics. Google evaluates the 75th percentile of page loads, so your scores must be consistently good, not just occasionally meeting targets.

Core Web Vitals are a confirmed Google ranking signal as part of the page experience update. While content relevance remains the strongest factor, CWV can be the tiebreaker between pages with similar content quality and authority. Sites with consistently good CWV scores may see gradual ranking improvements, especially in competitive niches where many pages offer similar content. Poor scores can prevent otherwise strong pages from reaching top positions.

The fastest LCP improvements come from optimizing the largest above-the-fold element, which is usually a hero image or heading text. Compress and properly size images, serve them in modern formats like WebP, preload the LCP resource, and eliminate render-blocking CSS and JavaScript. Implementing a CDN can dramatically reduce server response time. These changes often cut LCP by 50 percent or more with relatively straightforward implementation.

CLS issues occur when page elements shift position during loading. Common causes include images without dimension attributes, dynamically injected content like ads or banners, web fonts causing text reflow, and asynchronously loaded components. Fix CLS by always specifying width and height on images and video elements, reserving space for dynamic content, using font-display: swap with preloaded fonts, and avoiding insertions above existing content.
