A voice AI agent is software that holds a spoken conversation and takes actions on someone’s behalf. It listens, understands the request, answers from approved information, and uses connected tools, such as a calendar or CRM, to complete tasks like booking an appointment. In business, voice AI agents most often answer inbound phone calls.

## How a voice AI agent works

A voice agent combines speech recognition, a language model, and speech synthesis, or a single speech-to-speech model that does all three. The “agent” part is tool use: instead of only talking, it can check availability, create a booking, or look up a record, then report the verified result.
