> A toll-free number lets customers call a business without paying for the call. Learn the prefixes, how numbers are assigned, and when local fits better.

A toll-free number is a phone number that callers can dial without being charged for the call, because the business that owns it pays instead. In the US and Canada, toll-free numbers start with 800, 888, 877, 866, 855, 844, or 833. Businesses use them to look national, invite calls from anywhere, and keep one number across locations.

## How toll-free numbers work

According to the [FCC’s toll-free guide](https://www.fcc.gov/consumers/guides/what-toll-free-number-and-how-does-it-work), most toll-free numbers are assigned first come, first served through companies called Responsible Organizations, or RespOrgs. The prefixes are not interchangeable: 1-800 and 1-888 with the same seven digits reach different businesses. Calls to the number are routed to wherever the owner directs them.

Toll-free numbers can also receive texts when they are text-enabled, and business texting from them follows carrier rules. For a business that serves one city, a [local phone number](https://insertchat.com/glossary/local-phone-number) often looks more familiar to callers.

## Example: a regional courier

A courier company delivers across three states and wants one number on its trucks, invoices, and website. A toll-free number gives every customer the same number regardless of area code, and an AI receptionist on that number answers delivery-window and pickup questions around the clock. This scenario is illustrative.

InsertChat offers local and toll-free numbers where available; each paid plan includes one, and additional numbers are $10 per month. The number answers calls with the [AI receptionist](https://insertchat.com/product/phone) and, where the country and carrier support it, replies to texts as well.

Already have a toll-free number? US and Canadian businesses keep it and forward calls to InsertChat; number porting is not offered. See the [courier setup](https://insertchat.com/industries/couriers).

## Do toll-free numbers cost callers anything?

No call charge applies to the caller. The number’s owner pays for the call through its provider plan. Mobile callers may still use plan minutes.

## Should a local business use a toll-free number?

Usually a local number fits better, because local callers recognize the area code. Toll-free suits businesses that serve a wide area or want one number for several locations.
