Slot filling is how a conversational assistant gathers the specific details a task requires, called slots, such as a name, phone number, address, service type, or preferred date. The assistant checks which slots the customer has already provided, asks only for the missing ones, and completes the task once every required slot is filled.

## How slot filling works

Each task has a short list of required details. A booking might need a service, a date and time, a name, and a phone number. When a customer says “can someone clean my three-bedroom house on Friday?”, the assistant fills service, size, and date at once, then asks only for what’s left.

Good slot filling feels like conversation, not a form. It accepts details in any order, lets the customer correct an earlier answer, confirms tricky values like email addresses, and doesn’t ask again for something already said. Poor slot filling asks every question in a fixed sequence regardless of what the customer just told it.

## Example: booking a house cleaning

A customer messages a house cleaning company: “Need a deep clean for a 3 bed 2 bath before we move out on the 28th.” The assistant already has the service, home size, and date. It asks for the address and a contact number, quotes the deep-clean price from the company’s rate sheet, and books the 27th, the last open slot before the move. This scenario is illustrative.
