Natural language understanding, or NLU, is the part of AI that works out what a person means from the words they use. It identifies the request, key details like dates or addresses, and the context, even when the same thing is said different ways. It is what lets an assistant respond to free-form questions instead of menus.

## How natural language understanding works

Classic NLU split understanding into two jobs: [intent recognition](https://insertchat.com/glossary/intent-recognition), which labels what the person wants, and entity extraction, which pulls out details such as a date or address. Designers had to list every intent and supply example phrases for each.

Large language models fold both jobs into one step and read the whole conversation, so they understand indirect requests, corrections, and follow-ups without a predefined intent list. They still need guardrails: when speech is garbled or a request is ambiguous, a well-built assistant asks rather than guessing what the person meant.

## Example: “my pool turned green after the storm”

A homeowner texts a pool service: “my pool turned green after the storm and the kids have a party Saturday.” Good NLU reads three things: an algae cleanup request, urgency tied to a date, and no mention of the address yet. The assistant explains the green-to-clean service from the company’s price list and asks for the address to offer a visit before Saturday. This scenario is illustrative.

## Does NLU work on phone calls?
