# What Is a Follow-Up Question in AI Chat?

> A follow-up question builds on what was just said, like “how long does it take?” Learn how AI handles follow-ups and how suggested ones help visitors.

A follow-up question is a question that depends on what was just said in a conversation, such as “how long does that take?” or “what about weekends?” after an answer. Handling follow-ups requires the assistant to remember context. In chat, follow-up questions are also suggested prompts the visitor can tap to keep the conversation going.

## How follow-up questions work

In a follow-up, the meaning of words like “that,” “it,” or “the second one” comes from earlier messages. Language-model assistants read the whole conversation, so they resolve those references naturally, while keyword bots treat each message alone and often answer the wrong thing.

Suggested follow-ups are a design tool: after an answer, the chat shows two or three short questions visitors commonly ask next. They help visitors who don’t know what to ask and steer the conversation toward useful outcomes, like booking.

## Example: a salon’s balayage questions

A visitor asks a hair salon’s website chat how much balayage costs and gets the price range. She then asks, “How long does it take?” and later, “Can I book that with Jen?” The assistant knows “it” and “that” mean balayage, answers from the salon’s service list, and offers Jen’s open times. This scenario is illustrative.

## Follow-ups in InsertChat

InsertChat’s assistant reads the full conversation, so follow-up questions work on chat, calls, texts, and email; on calls it interprets short follow-ups in the context of what it just said. In [website chat](https://insertchat.com/product/website), Smart Suggestions, on by default, show context-aware suggested replies, and you can add your own suggestion messages for visitors to tap.

Greeting messages set the first thing visitors see. See the [salon setup](https://insertchat.com/industries/salon).

## Why do some chatbots fail at follow-up questions?

Keyword and button bots handle each message on its own, without the conversation’s context. Questions like “what about Saturdays?” have no meaning without the previous answer.

## Do suggested follow-up questions help?

They help visitors who aren’t sure what to ask and make common next steps one tap away. Keep them short and relevant to the answer just given.
