# What Is Conditional Call Forwarding?

> Conditional call forwarding sends only unanswered, busy, or unreachable calls to another number. See how it works, common dial codes, and how to test it.

Conditional call forwarding redirects a call only when a condition is met: nobody answers within a set number of rings, the line is busy, or the phone is off or out of coverage. Your phone still rings first, and only the calls you can’t take move to another number, such as a colleague, an answering service, or an AI receptionist.

## How conditional call forwarding works

Mobile carriers commonly support separate codes for each condition. On GSM-style networks, Rogers documents *61* for no reply and *67* for busy, each followed by the destination and #, while Verizon wireless uses *71 to forward unanswered calls. Business phone systems usually expose the same options as rules with a ring timeout.

Testing needs care. If you answer your own test call, nothing forwards. Let it ring through, or call while the line is busy, to confirm the rule fires. Watch for your mobile voicemail: if voicemail picks up before the forward, the caller hears a mailbox instead.

## Example: an electrician between jobs

An electrician wants to answer customers himself when he can. He sets no-answer and busy forwarding to his AI receptionist. When he’s on a ladder and lets a call ring, it forwards after a few rings, and the assistant books an estimate. When he’s free, he answers as usual. This scenario is illustrative.

## Conditional forwarding with InsertChat

InsertChat’s forwarding setup supports three modes from its provider catalog: forward all calls, forward unanswered or busy calls, and forward calls after hours where the provider offers a schedule. For unanswered-or-busy forwarding, let InsertChat’s verification call ring without answering so your provider’s rule can forward it.

You can also skip carrier conditions entirely. Forward all calls, then use InsertChat’s own [call routing](https://insertchat.com/product/after-hours) to ring your mobile for 5 to 60 seconds before the assistant answers, with staff voicemail sending the call back to the AI. Provider steps: [Rogers](https://insertchat.com/call-forwarding/rogers), [Verizon](https://insertchat.com/call-forwarding/verizon), and others. See the [electrician setup](https://insertchat.com/industries/electrician).

## How many rings before a conditional forward?

It depends on the provider, and some let you change the timeout. If your voicemail answers before the forward, shorten the timeout or turn voicemail off on that line.

## Is conditional forwarding better than forwarding all calls?

It is better when you want to answer first. Forwarding all calls is simpler and lets the answering system apply its own schedule and ring rules, which you can change without dial codes.
