> Call screening checks who is calling and why before a call reaches the right person. Learn the types, from spam labels to receptionist screening, and AI’s role.

Call screening is the practice of finding out who is calling and why before deciding how to handle the call. It ranges from caller ID and carrier spam labels to a receptionist asking “May I ask what this is regarding?” Businesses screen calls to block spam, prioritize urgent customers, and keep staff focused on the calls that matter.

## How call screening works

Automated screening happens in the network. In the US, the FCC requires voice providers to support [STIR/SHAKEN caller ID authentication](https://www.fcc.gov/call-authentication), which helps carriers label or block likely spoofed robocalls. Phones and carriers then show warnings such as “Spam likely.” The risk is false positives: a real customer’s call labeled spam.

Conversational screening is what a good receptionist does: ask the caller’s name and reason for calling, then decide whether it is urgent, routine, a sales pitch, or for someone else. That kind of screening never rejects the caller outright; it sorts them, so customers always get somewhere.

## Example: an insurance agency’s front line

An independent insurance agency gets claims calls, quote requests, and a steady stream of vendor pitches. A screening assistant asks each caller what they need: claims callers get the carrier’s claims number and a note for the agent, quote requests get their details captured for a producer, and sales pitches get a polite email address. This scenario is illustrative.

## How InsertChat screens calls

InsertChat screens by conversation. The [AI receptionist](https://insertchat.com/product/phone) asks for each caller’s name, number, and reason for calling, answers what it can, and sorts the rest: urgent situations trigger an alert, requests for a person are marked needs-you, and high-intent callers are flagged. Your team can move junk conversations to the Spam view in the [shared inbox](https://insertchat.com/product/inbox).

InsertChat never rejects a call because it might be spam, so a wrongly flagged customer still gets answered. It does not record calls; every call has a transcript and summary instead. See the [insurance agency setup](https://insertchat.com/industries/insurance).

## Does call screening block robocalls?

Carrier tools based on caller ID authentication can label or block many robocalls. Conversational screening by a receptionist or AI sorts the calls that get through.

## Is it rude to screen business calls?

Not when it helps the caller. Asking for a name and reason lets the business route the call or answer it faster. It feels rude only when it becomes a barrier with no path to a person.
